As scandals are concerned, the Rampart fiasco of the late nineties rated low on sex appeal. Therefore it’s little surprise that, seven years after its theoretical resolution, the smoking gun behind this landmark investigation remains largely unheralded. The case unfolded not for the work of shadowy informants or sly forensic technicians, but one man’s bad manners. It’s true, really. Read the rest of this entry »

Episode One of “The Biography of John Austin,” a multi-part online documentary featuring Ras Kass.
As part of a cross-the-board re-branding campaign, this series is just one of the many exciting projects in development for the “Waterproof MC.” Says Donnie Bo Sibley of Avatar management, “Ras Kass is embarking in new aspects of his life. He is focusing on developing new level of creativity and connecting with his fans on a more personal level.” Read the rest of this entry »

Long after Jay Leno retired the Dancing Itos, and Geraldo Rivera’s righteous indignation dissolved into the atmosphere, I still wasn’t done with O.J. The ordeal began when I was fifteen years-old – recently free from braces and enjoying the final week of my freshman year. The first report from the bloody crime scene broke as I sat in my living room, drawing a portrait of Randall Cunningham that was nearly as gruesome. Read the rest of this entry »

San Diego natives understand why I was so inspired by this project. You can’t swing a cat in San Diego County without hitting a limb on the ‘Berto family tree, so enjoying the local taco shop culture is truly a pastime unto itself. So I was thrilled to participate in the Clink Room’s high-concept “Taco Shop League Collaboration.”
The competition, sponsored by New Era, invited concept & logo submissions – I produced two, each merging Irish and Mexican cultures (description in thumbnails). I didn’t make the final cut, but look forward to the Clink Room’s future competitions…

Cover art for “Another Day,” the debut album from LA-based rock band Aperfectworld.
The dominating imagery for the album jacket is taken from surgeon William Cheselden’s illustrated manual, Osteographia or the Anatomy of Bones, originally published in 1733. Public domain is a beautiful thing, really. The selection of the cover image inspired a pervasive theme, and the haunting illustrations lent themselves nicely to the musical content. GuerillaPress to the rescue!
Having undergone unfortunate and irreversible harm, the rough-cut of “The Reconciliation” landed at my desk as a last resort. A salvage-job for sure, I threw everything but the kitchen sink at the original composition, aiming for a complete overhaul. The result is the flashy and hyperactive video below – I mean that affectionately, having seen it’s original state. Saying the video is overproduced would be an understatement, but I’m happy to have put forth some presentable visuals to accompany the music… Read the rest of this entry »

Concept art for Russian Sub!, a series in consideration at Comedy Central. Naturally, it would be an honor to participate in the first half-hour sitcom devoted to nautical espionage.
It’s been almost 25 years since Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago ended the Cold War, but the iconography (and yes, stereotypes) of the era still linger. Fear of the Hammer & Sickle inspired a decade of joyously violent action films, so here’s hoping it can leave a legacy of comedy as well…. Read the rest of this entry »

Having retired the old Guerilla Press format, I owe a debt of gratitude to one Brother Abdul Rahim – known in previous incarnations as Block, Catfish & Grits, The Goddamn Hog Butcher, and Cream Abdul Babar.
In addition to waging battle with me for The Most Honorable Rib Plate, and authoring the funniest Myspace bulletin ever, the good Brother was kind enough to compose the Guerilla Press theme music. Read the rest of this entry »
